Johnswell ancestors
Today we left Killarney and drove inland to the Rock of Cashel in Kilkenny where there are several ancient ruins on a high rock above the town. June was intrigued by the jackdaws nesting in holes in the walls of the cathedral.
We went on to Johnswell which is a small village outside Kilkenny. My 4th great grandmother Mary Lahey and my 3rd great grandmother Mary Tobin, her daughter came from Johnswell and were transported to New South Wales in 1837 for sheep stealing. We found the holy well the village is named for and several headstones of Tobin and Leahy cousins, as well as the Catholic church where they would have attended mass.
Today we chose to use the motorways instead of backroads, and zoomed along at 120 km/hour while the locals went even faster. We arrived at our destination with time to spare.
Tonight we are staying in Tramore, a quiet holiday town by the beach near Waterford. We discovered a new form of laundromat which is a self contained unit parked at a service station.
