The walled city of Derry

We had time to spare before we caught the train from Paddington to Heathrow this morning, so we walked along the canal to Little Venice. I had no idea there were canal boats in London.  We were looking for the rolling bridge, which is a bridge during the day and rolls up into a sculpture at night, and didn't realise we had already crossed it.

We flew in a small plane to Derry and picked up an Avis car from a lovely Irish man called Martin at Derry airport. Martin enjoys a 'crack' which I think means a joke.  The roundabouts here are scary because the Irish all drive very fast, but we made it to our hotel.

We drove into the city centre and walked the  Derry Walls. They were built around 1613-1618 as defences for early seventeenth century settlers from England and Scotland. My Fullerton ancestors were settlers from Scotland around that time. I wish I knew more about Irish history.
